There is so much giving and receiving at Christmas. Many of us have been taught "it is more blessed to give than to receive." This sometimes leads us to not have difficulty receiving graciously. Please join us as we explore Receiving at Christmas.

There will be a discussion group after the service, the general focus will be on what we have received from others, especially from this who have passed on.

For some of us, we are mourning recently losses, for others, we have losses from the past that might not be completely resolved. I want to encourage your participation with me in preparing ourselves for greater prosperity in the new year!

We at Unity of Kanawha Valley have already declared that we are a demonstration of God's unconditional Love, and I am feeling ready in my life to take this to a new level!

1st Friday, of each month -  Spiritual Cinema Circle
Movie for Nov 7  starts at 6:15pm or so with a potluck dinner, Film starts at 7pm
The King Of California, starring Michael Douglas and Evan Rachel Wood, involves a daughter struggling to connect with her father, just out of a mental institution.  The father takes his only daughter on an adventure to find ancient Spanish treasure  he believes is buried under the local Costco.   Difficult to find common ground for communication to bring them closer together, reconnection becomes possible through an opening of grace.  93 minutes long.

This Sunday I will be continuing the series of lessons on the Unity/New Thought classic, Lessons in Turth by Emilie Cady. Cady was a homepathic physician at the turn of the last century. She deeply influenced the Filmores as they were developing their New Thought ideas.

Cady wrote:

“IN THIS MOMENT MEDITATION”: A UKV FRIENDS COLLABORATION

The result of a combination of gifts and talents resulted is “In This Moment: A Meditation.”

Directed by Ron Sowell, Music Director of UKV and WV Mountain Stage it is played and sung by Jack Kennedy UKV Vocalist and Pianist and Chorus and General Music Director at Stonewall Middle School, Heidi Muller, Vocalist and Musician. The recording artist is Bob Webb who is also a musician.

Pastoral Leader, Sky Kershner’s response was Absolutely Beautiful! WOW!

After guiding a reflective reading group in Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now at West Virginia Institute for Spirituality four years ago, LaRee Naviaux created the first verses and melody of this meditation. Additional verses were added after she guided a group in conjunction with the class that Eckhart and Oprah conducted on A New Earth.

LaRee states, “Singing this enabled me to focus and re-center when I felt unsettled. Since this would be helpful for others, I contacted Ron, Heidi, Jack, and Bob. Ultimately they all brought it together.“

This Sunday I will try to do the same with our second sentence: "We realize our Oneness and we honor our uniqueness." What is this mystery of oneness, and how do we deal with our differences? When is a difference too much of a difference and how can we deal with that? Please plan to join us for a discussion after the lesson.

Lesson for Sunday Aug 31: Can You be so Lost?

Can you be so lost there is no finding your way back??

The discussion group last Sunday after church last week seemed very interested in exploring the interplay between moments when we are in our higher self (in our Christ consciousness) and moments when we or others are in a more burdened state of mind.

The discussion moved to the idea of whether there are times when one of us is so lost we are completely gone, and whether evil exists as a state of being so far gone it is impossible to get back, to find one's Self again.

In Unity, we see evil not having power or reality, so it is sometimes difficult to know how to respond when this idea has prevelance in the world around us. I am interested in trying to lift up the positive side of this.

What about about Satyagraha, which is Gandhi's idea of "Truth-force?" How can we help create and discover more moments that redeem situations and relationships that seem to be completely lost?

Help Wanted: We are in need of a child care provider for or pre-school kids on Sunday mornings from 11am - 1pm. This is a paid position. Survey Gridlock Broken!

Thanks for your help taking the survey about lesson ideas and the length of the service (and my lessons). Here are the results:
22% said please go shorter so we can end at noon
61% said the length is just right
17% said please go longer, we have traveled a long distance to get here and want to here more

The breaking of the gridlock (at one point it was dead even between all three choices) is a real relief, as one member observed "This means you can't win, no matter what you do, 2/3's of the members won't like it."

As a result, I am going to recommend that we plan on the service ending by 12:10, and I will try to throw a shorter lesson in from time to time for those who have obligations right after church. Thanks for your feedback and help!

UKV Visioneers!

UKV's Visioning Commitee will be holding a one day Visioning Retreat on Saturday, Sept 6at Marshal Universit Graditate College in South Charleston (thanks to member Gloria Sage!). The retreat will be facilitated by Rev. Stephanie Seigh who will be joining us from Pennsyvania.

Any one is welcome to attend this event. We do ask for full commitment from all paricipants. This will be an all day event!

Rev. Stephanie is a Certified PeaceWorker for the Ministry for PeaceMaking of the Association of Unity Churches and a Certified Coach through the Academy for Coaching Excellence in Sacramento, CA, having studied with Maria Nemeth, author of The Energy of Money and Mastering Life's Energies and is accredited through the International coaching Federation. As a coach, Stephanie specializes in working with and empowering spiritual leaders to reach new levels of clarity and effectiveness in their organization, and to support those leaders in truly enjoying their work. She is an ordained Interfaith Minister, a graduate of The New Seminary, an interfaith seminary in New York City. She obtained a BS in biology at The Pennsylvania State University. She was most recently spiritual leader of Unity of Lehigh Valley in Emmaus, PS and is a regular consultant with various church boards throughout the East Coast. She specializes in church growth and revitalization and in facilitating joyful and effective leadership.

Lauren Mani Weds

UKV founding members John and Jan Mani celebrate the wedding of their daughter, Lauren, to Greg Ogrinz. We wish them a lifetime of happy memories!!!

Compasionate Communication

Attendance at our Compassionate Communication workshops jumped this week from 15 to 25 participants! WoW!

We will be concluding this round of practice sessions on July 27, working on how to make requests. The practice group will continue again in the Fall.

Anna Lavendar moving to NYC!

Anna (left, shown with her mom, Iara) will be moving to the Big Apple this week! Anna recently graduated from Marshall U with a degree in teaching. She will be tutoring and working at the big downtown Macy's.

Anna is asking for help selling her car, and I am asking for any contacts with friendly WV folks in New York. Please let me know if you have any prospects! - Sky 550-0000.

Memorial Service for Patrick Smith, June 5, 2008

Lenna Schultz's son, who made his transition this week at the age of 30. The service was informal in the best sense, not everyone used the microphone so there are a few drop-out in the audio. The service seemed to capture Patrick's humor, creativity, connection, intelligence, and love of life. click here
