Big Night for Open Stage for Kid's!

Open Stage for Kid's had a huge opening night last night!!! We had 15 kid performers and an appreciative audience of over 30 people!!!

The performance were wonderful. Everything from Somewhere Over the Rainbow to brake dancing, to a single knock-knock joke. Everyone had a wonderful time!!!

Thanks to all of our performers:
  • Ron Sowell warmed us up with his song Opposite Day, with big singing along from all of the kids!
  • Amanda Schwartz did a wonderful job starting us off on electric guitar, singing two songs she wrote herself: No One's Listening, and Glass Bottles. The songs rocked! (No One's Listening is a featured song on the Open Stage for Kid's web-page!)
  • Devon Elliot showed great courage, composure and talent with a stirring rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
  • David Kershner-Leon played two songs on the piano
  • Demma Kahwash recited a poem The Daddy Long Leg.
  • David Murry tested the stage for a future dance
  • Katrina Murry did a freestyle clogging jig.
  • Kole McCallister did a very cool robot brake dance including elements from Walk Like an Egyptian, and he can move his hair without touching it.
  • Jennna Kahwash and Francesca George were very creative with a play about counting flies in a bottle.
  • TJ Salanngo shared a knock-knock joke with some very funny laughing.
  • Maria Cevallos showed great versatility singing The Sun will Come Out Tomorrow, followed by the To Be or Not to Be speech by Hamlet (the most amazing contrast of the evening), and later, a piano piece by Tchaikovsky.
  • And Tessa Dillan caped off the kids talent with two rousing fiddle pieces that had us practically dancing in the aisles!

Ron finished off the evening with a fun sing-along of Turkey in the Straw (turkey in the cafeteria!?), with Tessa joining right in on the fiddle.

It was a magical and fun-filled night, we were done by 7:30, just right for early bed-times.

Special thanks to our adult hosts and helpers: Matt Schwartz on the sound board, Pam Hipler for supplies, and Unity of Kanawha Valley for the snacks, the support, and the wonderful stage for all of our fun!!!

"The Challenge of Service"
Reading Obama's memoir, "Dreams of my Father," I am struck by the challenges of his early life, and his continual call to service. In this talk I will be revisiting King's "arc of history" idea, having found its origins, not in MLK himself, but in an earlier theologian. Who bends the arc of history, and how is it bent? Please join us in a question I have been struggling with and you may help me and us find the answer for!

There will be a discussion after the service, ending by 1:00

This Friday: Kid's Open Stage,
Jan 23, 6:30 - 8:00
For kids ages 5 - 15. Bring whatever talent you would like to get better at: playing an instrument, singing, reading, poetry, dancing, talking, telling a joke, showing a piece of art, magic,  just talking into a microphone. Kids of all ages welcome! More than 200 fliers have gone out to to teachers and kids in the area! It could be wild! Please join us for our kick-off event. Performers sign up at 6 pm. Hosted by Ron and Sky

Next Sunday, Feb 1, Congregational Meeting after the Service

Making a Difference
I am contributing to a better day and a brighter world for all.
I appreciate and give thanks for the many people who have touched my life. They have made a difference in the direction my path has taken. Through their words and actions, friends, teachers, family members, even strangers have enriched my life and provided me with models to emulate.
The gift of such exemplary people has blessed me and encouraged me to be mindful of the ways I impact the lives of those around me. How I speak and behave in the presence of both children and adults can be a positive influence. I contribute to a better day and a brighter world for all.
My prayer-filled thoughts, the words I speak, and the gifts of kindness I give are small steps. Combined with those of others, they contribute to an expanding consciousness of divine possibilities for our world.

This Sunday at Unity - Jan 4 2009

Unity of Kanawha Valley
Positive, Practical Christianity

This Sunday at Unity
--  Jan 4, 2009 at 11:00 am
"Thadeus, Letting Go, and The Burning Bowl Ceremony"
I was struck during our 12 Powers Candle-lighting service before Christmas that Thadeus is the disciple of renunciation and letting go. After a little research, I have some ideas why. He might easily become the 'patron saint' for a number of us this year!
Regarding the Burning Bowl, Pam Hippler writes: "Our 1st Sunday Service of the New Year is always moving and inspirational. If you haven't experienced a Burning Bowl Ceremony, it can be very powerful. A release list is filled out by every person and then released as it is burned. After the release, each person will write a "letter to God" that includes those things or situations that you would like to bring into your life."
     Please join us!

This Friday (tonight!):
Starting off Friday evening with the Spiritual Cinema night.  The fun starts at 6:30 pm with food to share.  Please bring a favorite dish.  The movie starts at 7pm.

And on Saturday:
The un-decorating of Christmas decorations in the church will take place on Saturday at 9:30am.  If anyone is available to assist, please come join in.  It takes much less time to take down the beautiful decorations then to put them up.  Also if you loaned UKV an angel for the tree or church, please pick them up.
(You can also retrieve it on Sunday)

Wishing all of us a great year!!!

Remember, you are a Blessing!
