"Spiritual Resistance"
This Sunday I'm going to finish up some thoughts from last week about Creative Resistance: a bible story about a man who teaches God about tolerance, and another about a woman who taught Jesus and love.
And then I'd like to explore some of the Unity ideas on Non-resistance, and how new thought churches interpret the non-resistance passages from the Sermon on the Mount from a completely spiritual framework.

Tithing Workshop continues Sunday after the service
This week we're talking about "Where did you belief's about money come from?" Contact Kathy Dent for more info: copyalot@aol.com

Adult Bible Study starts this Monday, Jan 31 at 5:30 at UKV

We are using the Marcus Borg book "Jesus: Uncovering the Life, Teachings, and Relevance of a Religious Revolutionary". This week: Chapter One.

Gratitude
From a place of gratitude, I see beauty in everyone and everything.

When I adopt an attitude of gratitude, I create a shift in my outlook. Instead of seeing problems, I see opportunities. Instead of feeling hopeless, I feel hopeful. By focusing on what is working well, I invite more of the same.

When I let others know, "I am grateful for you," I create a connection of love and understanding. Through these simple words, I help others see their own beauty and the contribution they make in the world.

Through prayer, meditation or journal writing, I begin and end each day reflecting on the many ways Spirit blesses me. I approach life in a state of gratitude. I see the magnificence all around me, and I am filled with joy for all the good in this world.

We welcome this in every way and everywhere with utmost gratitude.--Acts 24:3

Adult "Jesus in the Bible" Class at Unity

Thank you everyone for your enthusiastic response to the lesson yesterday
It sounds like there are others who might like to explore go on a Quest for the Historic Jesus with me

We could use the Marcus Borg book "Jesus: Uncovering the Life, Teachings, and Relevance of a Religious Revolutionary"
which costs $10 through Amazon and has 10 chapters. Discussing a chapter a week, we could probably finish it be Easter.

This is a fascinating book that will give you a possible life changing understanding of Jesus. I guarantee great discussions! It might be the best $10 you spend this year!

I am taking a poll to see who is interested and if we can find a regular time to meet.

Please click here to take the poll.

"Creative Resistance"
I'm finishing up this series on the Power of Strength and Finding your Voice by looking at a some of Jesus' teachings on love from the Sermon on the Mount. These have been widely mis-understood leading personal and social bondage. Join us to hear some surprising understanding of what Jesus might have meant in the context of his times. I will also be referencing the new book Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. (The title is from a Chinese proverb: "Women hold up half the sky.")

Ron is with Mt Stage in Scotland this weekend!

Prosperity
I live in an abundant universe.

I give freely, not only of my financial resources, but also of my time, energy and love. I share from my willingness and eagerness to bless others. Whether I recycle gently-used household items, spend time tutoring a child, or volunteer to assist someone in need, I am giving from my heart. I receive the blessings of joy, satisfaction and gratitude as soon as I give to another.

As I give and receive, I realize that material possessions do not define prosperity. Prosperity is a mind-set, a consciousness, a knowing that everything we need is already supplied. My giving opens the way for God's blessings to circulate. I give from the knowledge that I live in an abundant universe.

The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.--2 Corinthians 9:6

To Blue for helping with the un-decorating on Saturday the 1st as well.  Thanks so much, Blue!

To Lyle for picking up our gas grill in Charleston and delivering it to our house in Clendenin.

To Beverly Wright who brought cartoon paper plates, bowls and cups to the Sojourner's dinner when she helped serve.

To Peggy Gunter who always blesses us with the "right words" and who sent heart warming New Year's greetings.

To Sky who reached out to Rev. English with a loving caring touch as Ron and Jack sang their traditional Martin Luther King tribute.

To Sky who has wonderful messages from an open heart that speaks to our hearts and spirits.

To E.E. Cummings who left these words for us that manifest in the wisdom of the board to move to Bridge and Myrtle and the miraculous continuation of events occurring at Unity of Kanawha Valley!   "Miracles are to come.  With you I leave a remembrance of miracles:  they are by somebody who can love and who shall be continually reborn, a human being; ...Nothing false, nothing difficult or easy or small or colossal. Nothing ordinary or extraordinary, nothing emptied or filled, real or unreal; nothing feeble and known or clumsy and guessed. Everywhere tints childrening, innocent spontaneous, true.  ...Only how measureless cool flames of making; only each other building always distinct selves of mutual entirely opening;only alive. ...only to grow.  Always the beautiful answer who asks a more beautiful question."

And remember, you are a Blessing!

And from Rev Ron English, our speaker tomorrow on the use of prayer in the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Sky --

I plan to address the prayer life of MLKJ as the source of his courage. But it's not truly legitimate to do so without discussing the legacy of King's spiritual mentor, Dr. Howard Thurman. Here is a quote that signifies the essence of his consciousness of spirituality for social transformation:
The movement of the Spirit of God in the hearts of men often calls them to act against the spirit of their times or causes them to anticipate a spirit which is yet in the making. In a moment of dedication, they are given wisdom and courage to dare a deed that challenges and to kindle a hope that inspires."

Rev Ron English: "Martin Luther King, Jr: The Use of Prayer for Courage"

I am so excited about this Sunday's speaker. When I saw that my friend Rev. Ron English was available for this Sunday I jumped at the chance to have him join us. Ron will be speaking on a topic close to our Unity heart: the use prayer for courage.

Ron grew up in Atlanta with Martin Luther King, Jr. He was ordained by King's father, who was his pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Ron worked closely with King Jr and many projects, and in the end, and spoke at Kings funeral. He is a special guy and a wonderful speaker. This will be a very special service.

Ron and I will be hosting a discussion immediately after the service.

Many Thanks to all who helped un-decorate the church

This project is now complete

Hello everyone,

Several people have requested the words to the poem that I read at this morning's church service.  It is also available at www.stewartstjohnlight.com on a YouTube video with beautiful ocean pictures (great for this time of the year).

Pam

"This Year" by Stewart St. John

This Year will be the best year of my life.

I will awaken to the magic around me.

It will be a return to enjoying the simple things like family and friends
.
It will be the year of less complaining and more appreciating.

It will be a year to be proud of not just my country but my planet.

This year I will laugh more, dance more, love more.
And be healthier than ever because of it.

I'll spend more time with my children and find time to listen to a parent reflect on the good ol' days.

This year I will take that vacation I always wanted because I have the time.
      (I always did).

I'll discover true love in the eyes of the person looking back at me.

This year, I'll remember that I am Spirit in human form.
     We all are.

I will live more consciously, deliberately, joyfully.

I'll love myself for who I am, just the way I am, and celebrate my uniqueness.

This year IS my best year because I choose it to be.

Unity News: The Revival of Uni-teens!

The Revival of Uni-teens!

I've started a Uni-teens Bible Study group, and we had our first pizza meeting tonight. What a wonderful group of young people we have. There were so many surprises and questions. From "Do you mean Jesus wasn't Christian?" to "Did Jesus know he was the son of God?" Wow!

I am so enthusiastic about our kids. They are AMAZING!

And you are a Blessing!

Sky

Here is my vision for this amazing group:

Uni-teen's Bible Study

Teens 12 - 18 (Jr and Sr HS students) are welcome to join Sky for an on going study of how Unity looks at the Bible and at the life and teachings of Jesus. This is a class in biblical literacy.

Classes usually meet twice a month through the year. Teens are encouraged to bring a bible and a journal for notes and thoughts.

Teens in this class are also encouraged to participate in a Unity confirmation / bar mitzvah / coming of age ceremony. This can happen near any birthday between the 13th and 16th years, or later, at the parents and teen's choosing. The ceremony happens during our during our regular Sunday service time, and includes prayers, songs, hymns, scriptures, and a lesson written and designed be the teen and the pastor working together. The service is followed by a celebration reception in the open stage area. Gifts and affirmations for the teen coming of age are encouraged.

Many thanks for our parents and the full house of folks who came to participate in the Burning Bowl Service. For Peggy and her wonderful hosting of the service, for Ron and Jack and Ryan for the perfect music, for Pam Hippler's sharing of a wonderful poem (we will be sending it out to everyone).

And for the kids, wow the kids (we had 17 kids, not counting the teens)!
See photos here:

For our seven (or more guests) at the service today!

The ashes from our service today have been returned to the earth in our garden under the Jesus window. Let's see what wonderful things grow out of our release today!

For Nate and Linda A, and Sharon, and Ruth, and Peggy, and little Sweet Pea for taking down all of the Christmas decorations yesterday!

And these appreciations from our members:

"To Cyndi McGill who got up at 5 AM on the Dec 22nd focusing with love and concern on the Sojourners' Dinner that night! She was such a vital participating spirit and contributor. What a blessing she is to the Unity family and greater Charleston community. A New Year's Blessing

A wonderful blessing from Peggy Gunter

Wishing you a wonderful day and a wonderful year

Sky

New Year's Blessing

Today I wish for you a day of ordinary miracles.
A fresh pot of coffee you didn't have to make yourself.
An unexpected phone call from an old friend.
Green stoplights on your way to work or shop.
I wish you a day of little things to rejoice in...
The fastest line at the grocery store.
A good sing along song on the radio.
Your keys right where you look.
I wish you a day of happiness and perfection-little bite-size pieces
of perfection that give you the funny feeling that the Lord is smiling
on you,
holding you so gently because you are someone special and rare.

I wish You a day of Peace, Happiness and Joy.

They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to
appreciate them, a day to love them, but then an entire life to forget them.

Take the time!cid:27.2358704656@web50904.mail.re2.yahoo.com
Wishing you the very best for 2011
and....
Peace on Earth
