Hello everyone,

We hope that you have had a wonderful holiday week.

The following events are happening this week at Unity:

FRIDAY - OPEN MIC 4 KIDS!! AT 6:30PM.  Spencer Elliott will be hosting this event.  Performers from the ages of 5-15 can sign up to perform starting at 6pm.  Everyone is welcome and no admission charge! 

SUNDAY CHURCH SERVICE AT 11AM - Guest speaker Kathleen DuBois will be speaking on "The Gift of Letting Go".  Musicians this week will be Jack and Ryan Kennedy.


FUTURE EVENTS

Monday, New Year's Eve - music, food, and dancing starting at 9am.  There are sign-up sheets on the tables in the sanctuary and foyer if you are interested.

Friday, Jan. 4th - Movie Night - Food sharing at 6pm with the movie starting at 6:30pm.

Saturday, Jan. 5th - Inner Listening class at 10:30am with Marianne Gettman.

Saturday, Jan. 5th - Woody Hawley Concert at 7:30pm.

Sunday, Jan. 6th - Burning Bowl Ceremony at 11am church service.  Just a reminder to be thinking about what you would like to put on your Release List that will be burned in the service and what you would like to put in your Letter to God about the upcoming year.

Hello everyone,

Please keep Blue's sister, Oretta (Susie) Keeney in your thoughts and prayers.  She is currently in surgery for a broken ankle.  I do not know all the details but she was walking a dog that she was dog-sitting and slipped on wet grass yesterday evening.  Susie is the caregiver for her husband who is in the early stages of Alzheimer's.   Please keep the entire family in your prayers.

Hello everyone.  Again, sad to report the passing of someone in our music community.  Connie was the wife of our Dan Cowan who sang and played the guitar and was to everyone of our homeplace gatherings.

 

In order to be of support during this difficult time for Dan and his daughters sad and sudden loss, members of the homeplace family, both relatives and music friends are making and buying food for the family gathering after the burial tomorrow which is Sunday.  This gathering will be at our friendly and familiar homeplace.  Dan was going to hire a caterer, however, help was pledged by Nancy McClellan, Zoe Brewer and Judy Archibald along with myself to make and gather as much food and supplies as we think needed.

 

Bobby Taylor will be playing Amazing Grace at the Funeral.

Connie Cowan, 53, of Elkview, passed away December 21, 2012, at CAMC General Hospital.

She was a 1977 graduate of Herbert Hoover High School and was formerly employed by Standard Laboratories as a receptionist. Connie was a Christian and loved her family dearly. Her two daughters, Kathleen and Cara, were the true joy of her life as well as her husband, Dan. She loved to cook and was a real nutritionist.

She was born May 21, 1959, to Thomas Franklin Hodges and the late Anna Ruth Schoolcraft Hodges.

She is also survived by her husband of 26 years, Daniel Cowan; daughters, Kathleen Anne Cowan and Cara Elizabeth Cowan, both at home; brothers, Thomas Randall and wife, Karen of Barren Creek Road and David Lee and wife, Tammy of Liberty.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, December 23, 2012 at Hafer Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor David Keeney officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service December 23, 2012 at the funeral home.

Online condolences may be sent to www.haferfuneralhome.net. Hafer Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements for the Cowan family.

Please hold my friend, Wendy Higgins, in your prayers.  A tree fell on her back during the storm from hurricane Sandy.  No broken bones but bruised and very sore.  They also had lots of damage.  She said their road still looks like a tornado came through.  She lives in the area around Buckhannon.

This Week's Events at Unity

Hello everyone,

We have an exciting week of events at Unity of Kanawha Valley:

TONIGHT - OUR CHRISTMAS CANDLE LIGHTING SERVICE AT 7PM.  This is truly one of the most beautiful services of the year.  Musicians this evening will be Ron Sowell, Jack Kennedy, Ryan Kennedy, Devin Elliott, Mark Davis, and Doug Payne.  The glow of the sanctuary in complete candle light is a sight to behold.

FRIDAY - CHRISTMAS CAROL KARAOKE AT 7PM.  Please join us for a fun and entertaining evening of singing and dancing.  There will be a large selection of songs along with Christmas carols.  Please bring food to share if you would like.  What a great way to enjoy the holiday season.

SUNDAY SERVICE AT 11AM - This Sunday's church service is Children's Service Sunday.  The entire service will be hosted by our kids.  There will be the Christmas story readings and lots of music!!!

REMINDER - THAT THIS IS THE LAST SUNDAY FOR THE COLLECTION OF CHILDREN'S GIFTS FOR THE SOJOURNER'S SHELTER.  THE GIFTS WILL BE DELIVERED RIGHT AFTER THE SUNDAY SERVICE.

There are lots of upcoming events and news happening at Unity of Kanawha Valley:


THURSDAY (TOMORROW) - ESSENTIAL OIL PARTY FROM 6-8 PM.  On "Why was Frankincense gifted to the new baby King?" and how can essential oils help us shift more easily with the new energies.  FREE.  Reservations are required   Please call Nancy Louise at 304-344-9442 or email her at brightlovelight@gmail.com. 

FRIDAY - RON SOWELL'S OPEN MIC AT 7:30PM.  Performers sign up at 7pm.  Please join us for a lovely evening of entertainment in a warm and friendly atmosphere.  Admission is $5.00.  Performers, seniors, and kids are $2.00.

SUNDAY AT 10AM - BOOK STUDY GROUP.  The last class for studying and discussing the "Jesus 2.1" book.

CHURCH SERVICE THIS SUNDAY AT 11AM - Rev. Sky Kershner will be speaking on "How We Are Like Jesus".  Musicians this week will be Ron Sowell, Jack Kennedy, Ryan Kennedy, Mira Stanley, and Chuck Costa. 

NEXT WEDNESDAY - CANDLE LIGHTING SERVICE AT 7PM.  Please joy us for our Christmas Candle Lighting Service.  It is always a truly inspiring and beautiful event featuring the 12 Power Candles.  Musicians (to date) for this event will be Ron Sowell, Jack Kennedy, Ryan Kennedy, Devin Elliott, Mark Davis, and Doug Payne.  If you are interested in being a candle lighter, please let me know.



FUTURE EVENTS

Friday, December 21st - Karaoke Night at 7pm.  Come join us for a fun-filled evening with lots of songs and Christmas carols. 

Sunday, December 23rd - Deadline for gifts to the Sojourners children.  The gifts will be delivered after church on Sunday. 

Friday, December 28th - Open Mic 4 Kids at 6:30pm.  For performers, ages 5-15.

Monday, December 31st - New Year's Eve Get-Together starting at 9pm.  Blue will be playing music and just bring a snack to share.  Help us ring in the New Year with a great group of people.  UKV would like to have a head count to see how many people are interested.  If you are interested and would like to attend, please see the sign-up sheet on the table in the sanctuary.



UKV's Christmas Community Outreach

We are collecting WRAPPED gifts for the children currently staying at the Sojourners' Shelter.  They currently have 25 children staying there ranging from a newborn baby to a 17 year old.  Sunday, December 23rd will be the last day that we accepted the gifts which will be delivered to the shelter right after the Sunday service.

UKV is also accepting donations for Heifer International.  This organization feeds the needy all over the world.  Depending on many donations that UKV receives, we can donate some animals to families around the world.  They promise that the first born animal from their gifted animal goes to a neighbor and soon the village learns how to provide for themselves.  So far, we have collected $220.  For another $30, a family can receive a water buffalo. With some more donations, we can donate for example - $20 = a flock of chicks, $30= honey bees for a farm in Kentucky, a goat = $120, 3 bunnies = $60, etc.



I would like to thank everyone for your generous donations to date.  We have several gifts under the tree for the Sojourner children, some money to the Heifer International, and some donations to the victims of the house fire of Jack's wife, Andrea's co-worker.  Your generosity is so very appreciated.

FRIDAY - OPEN MIC 4 KIDS!!!  Sky will be hosting Open Mic 4 Kids! this Friday at 6:30pm.  Performers ages 5-15 can start signing up at 6pm.  No admission fee and everyone is welcome!  It's a wonderful evening of entertainment and fun.

SATURDAY - INNER LISTENING CLASS WITH MARIANNE GETTMAN AT 10:30AM.  Please join Marianne for a wonderful class of breathing exercises, chakra meditation, and Qi Gong Flow.  Class is on a donation basis with all proceeds going to UKV. 

SATURDAY - DECORATING AND GREENING THE CHURCH FOR CHRISTMAS AT 12:30PM - Join us for our annual decorating the church for Christmas.  The more hands, the merrier!!

SUNDAY - BOOK STUDY GROUP AT 10AM.  For the month of December, this group will be studying the book, "Jesus 2.1".

Hello everyone,

The following prayer request is from Gerie Ann:

Please pray for Kameron (Gerie Ann's great grandson).  His parents were ready to take him home and his temperature dropped, his bily rubin (spelling?) is up (jaundice) and he is lethargic.  They have to put a tube in his throat to measure food intake.  It's probably nothing serious, but very scary for first time parents.

Please keep their entire family in your thoughts and prayers.

The following prayer requests is from Gerie Ann.  Please pray for Sonya (her granddaughter by marriage) and unborn baby.  She is light labor and the baby isn't due for another month.  Doctors are saying when he is born, they will probably fly him to Charleston or Morgantown (they are in the Parkersburg area).

The following are events at Unity of Kanawha Valley this week:

FRIDAY - RON SOWELL'S OPEN MIC AT 7:30PM.  Performers sign up at 7pm.  Please join us for fun and entertainment.  Admission is $5.00 and seniors, kids, and performers get in for just $2.00.

SATURDAY - CONGRATULATIONS TO ANGELA VANCE AND CHRISTOPHER ROSS ON THEIR UPCOMING WEDDING.

SUNDAY - BOOK STUDY AT 10AM.

RIGHT AFTER SUNDAY SERVICE FROM 1-3PM- 2012 WORKSHOP WITH CHARLOTTE ABELL.  For more information or to sign up, please contact Marianne Gettman or myself.  "If you plan to attend church on Sunday and are participating in the workshop, if it's convenient, please bring food to share.  There will be people arriving around 1pm who do not attend UKV.  Since the workshop will be held in the activity room, we ask to please be mindful that there is paid attendance and there may also be limited parking available.  Thank you so much for your consideration." - Marianne.

SUNDAY AT 5PM - SURPRISE BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR JIM SELBE.  There will be music and karaoke provided along with some food and cake.  Please join us to surprise Jim.  Also we are having a card campaign to flood his mailbox, his birthday is on Monday and his address is 1505 Connell Rd, Chas 25314.

We would like to thank all the volunteers at the hot dog sale.  We made $270.60.  It's a really great profit for a cold and rainy Saturday!!!

Thank you also to Wes Davis for his ebay fundraiser for the church.  So far, Wes has sold $1251.78 in 2012 in merchandise for Unity.  Please continue to bring in your unwanted items to UKV for Wes.

surprise birthday celebration for Jim Selbe

Hello everyone,

There will be a surprise birthday celebration for Jim Selbe's 60th birthday on Sunday at Unity of Kanawha Valley at 5pm.  Blue will provide music and karaoke.  Light snacks and cake will be provided.  This is a surprise!!  No gifts, please.

 Gerie Ann suggested a card campaign.  Jim loves receiving mail.  We are trying to get as many people as possible to mail Jim a birthday card.  We hope to flood his mailbox!!

 I have an update on my daughter, Emily. Fortunately, she doesn't have shingles after all-was diagnosed by a PA and that was wrong. She does have cellulitus, which is an infection (in both legs) from a bacteria. She is on an antibiotic and off her Imuran for now. Please continue to pray for her recovery and I continually pray for her full healing of this terrible disease, Crohns. Thank you all so much.

FRIDAY - MOVIE NIGHT AT 6PM.  Food sharing starts at 6pm with the movie starting at 6:30pm.  This month's movie is Santa Claus 1 with Tim Allen.  It's a great movie to start off the holiday season and it's family friendly.

SATURDAY - INNER LISTENING AT 10:30AM WITH MARIANNE GETTMAN.  This class is a wonderful session of balance exercises, chakra meditation, and Qi Gong Flow.

ALSO ON SATURDAY - THE WOODY HAWLEY CONCERT SERIES CONTINUES WITH ROB CARLSON AT 7:30PM.  For more information, please contact the Clay Center at  theclaycenter.org.

SUNDAY - BOOK STUDY GROUP AT 10am.  Our November month of gratitude continues with the book, Simple Abundance.

CHURCH SERVICE ON SUNDAY AT 11AM - Rev. Sky Kershner will be speaking on All Saints Day and A Month of Abundance.  Please feel free to bring in an item or picture of someone who has passed.  Also in November, Sky has challenged us to write down 5 things that we are grateful each day.

The following events are taking place at Unity of Kanawha Valley this week:

FRIDAY - OPEN MIC 4 KIDS!! AT 6:30PM.  This event is for performers ages 5-15.  Everyone is welcome and admission is free.  Sky will be hosting this month's event.  Please bring your friends, parents, and grandparents.  This event is a family fun evening of entertainment.  Sign-ups for performers is at 6pm. 

SATURDAY - HOT DOG SALE FROM 11AM - 2PM.  Please join us for lunch at our hot dog sale and take a break from the activities of downtown and the Carriage Trail.  Hot dogs, chips, drinks, and desserts will all be for sale.  Volunteers and dessert donations are still needed. 

SUNDAY - BOOK STUDY CLASS AT 10AM.  This will be our final week of studying "Lessons in Truth'.  In November, the topic will be Gratitude.

SUNDAY - CHURCH SERVICE AT 11AM WITH REV. SKY KERSHNER.  Musicians this week will be Ron Sowell, Jack Kennedy, and Ryan Kennedy.

Happy 25th Anniversary to all who are members and who attend Unity of Kanawha Valley!  This Sunday, October 21st, we will be celebrating our 25th Anniversary.

Re: My father

Hello everyone,

Trish would like to thank all of you for keeping her and her father in your thoughts and prayers.  The following email is from Trish.

Pam

My father, James Quinton Ansley, passed away on Saturday, 10-06-12, after a brief illness. Although he fought hard to stay with us, his heart and body just could no longer keep up with his spirit. My fishing buddy will be missed sorely, not just by me, but by many as I am finding out more and more, day by day. I will especially miss his laughter and the twinkle in his eyes. Most of all, I will miss his presence.

There will be a public wake at Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home in Vidalia, GA on Thursday, 10-11-12 from 6 - 8 PM. The funeral will be Friday, 10-12-12 at 2 PM at Rocky Creek Baptist Church in Johnson's Corner, GA. The interment will be at Lakeview Memorial Gardens, just south of Vidalia, GA following the funeral service.

The gathering of the family will be at James Quinton's residence at 3259 Old Normantown Road, Vidalia GA. The number there is 912-538-7427.

My spirit has been warmed by all the generous outpouring of love and prayers for both my father and me during this time. I am eternally grateful to all those who have lifted us up in prayer.

SATURDAY - "INNER LISTENING CLASS" AT 10:30 AM.  Marianne Gettman leads this class of slow stretching, chakra meditations, guided relaxation, balance exercises, and Qi Gong Flow.

What is Unity? 14 Thoughts

Friends --

Two weeks ago we had a wonderful class after the Sunday Service. The theme was "What is Unity" and it was an intro class designed for folks considering becoming members of UKV (New Member Sunday will be on or UKV anniversary, Oct 21, 2012. Click here for more info on becoming a member.)

We had 18 participants in the class. Here is what some of them said in answer to the question: "What do you tell people when they ask you, What is Unity?"

• A place to dump my gratefulness.
• A place for searching and leaving with joy in my soul.
• Home. A place of love.
• A place to learn what is behind things, the reality of things.
• I can't describe it, but then, I can't describe the color blue either!
• A place for Love, not judgement.
• A place od no condemnation, where I am reminded that people are good.
• I think of Unity as the anti-church, an antidote to what church used to be for me.
• It is a little hippy church, but without the drugs. Open and honest.
• No one tells you what to be, they help you find out who you are.
• No condemnation, I feel loved for who I am
• A place to recharge
• It is my home
• It is my church

I think you might agree with me that these are extraordinary answers. Thank you for all of our particpants!

This Sunday we will be pushing forward with a second intro class: "What is Unity of Kanawha Valley." Please feel free to join us after the service to be part of another amazing discussion!

hot dog sale this Saturday - baked good and volunteers needed

Hello everyone,

I forgot to mention in the weekly events e-mail that Unity needs volunteers for this Saturday's hot dog sale.  We start setting up at 9am and clean-up is also needed after the sale has finished. 

We also need donated bake goods to sell.  The baked goods can be dropped off at 9am on Saturday or I will be at UKV from 9:30-2pm tomorrow.

This Week's Events at Unity of Kanawha Valley

HI everyone,

The following are events happening at Unity of Kanawha Valley this week:


FRIDAY - KARAOKE NIGHT AT 7PM.  Please come and join us for a wonderful fun evening of singing and dancing.  Admission is $2.00.  Refreshments are available.  Have some fun on the first day of fall. 

SATURDAY - HOT DOG SALE FROM 11AM - 2PM.  Hot dogs, veggie dogs, chips, and drinks will be available for purchase.  Come enjoy lunch outside in the beautiful fall weather or get a carry-out order to take home to watch the football games.

SUNDAY - ADULT BOOK STUDY CLASS AT 10AM.  This is the final week for studying "How to Pray Without Talking to God".  The October book study will be based on "Lessons in Truth".  Please let me know if you would like to reserve a book.

SUNDAY CHURCH SERVICE AT 11AM - Sky will be speaking on "Thoughts are Prayers, Thoughts are Things."  Musicians will be Ron Sowell, Jack Kennedy, and Ryan Kennedy.  PLEASE NOTE THAT A SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER IS NEEDED FOR THE GRADES 1-5 CLASS ON THIS SUNDAY.  The following email is from Mindy with the fall schedule for teachers to sign up.

Hello everyone,

The following are events happening at Unity of Kanawha Valley this week:

TOMORROW (THURSDAY)- UNITY'S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER SERVICE AT 6PM LED BY SHARON MULLINS.  Please join us for a short prayer service from 6-6:45pm on this very spiritual day.

FRIDAY - RON SOWELL'S OPEN MIC AT 7:30PM.  MIKE ARCURI WILL BE THIS MONTH'S HOST.  Performers sign up at 7pm.  General admission is $5.00 or $2.00 for seniors, kids, and performers.  Please join us for a wonderful evening of entertainment.

SUNDAY - ADULT BOOK STUDY GROUP AT 10AM.  This group is studying and discussing the book, "How to Pray Without Talking to God."

SUNDAY CHURCH SERVICE AT 11AM - SHARON MULLINS WILL BE OUR GUEST SPEAKER TALKING ABOUT "A PRAYER TOOL KIT".  MUSICIANS THIS WEEK WILL BE JACK KENNEDY AND MARK DAVIS.

Events this Week at Unity of Kanawha Valley

Hello everyone,

The following are events going on at Unity of Kanawha Valley this week:

FRIDAY - SPIRITUAL MOVIE NIGHT.  Food sharing starts at 6pm with the movie beginning at 6:30pm.  This month's movie is "Matching Jack".  In this movie, a woman struggling with her son's illness finds her life is turned upside down in a love story.

SUNDAY - ADULT BOOK STUDY CLASS OF "HOW TO PRAY WITHOUT TALKING TO GOD" AT 10AM.  Sky will lead this class upstairs in the Sunday School room.  This class on affirmative prayer will continue for the next 3 Sundays.

SUNDAY - CHURCH SERVICE AT 11AM WITH SKY KERSHNER.  MUSICIANS - RON SOWELL, JACK KENNEDY, AND RYAN KENNEDY.


FUTURE EVENTS IN SEPTEMBER:

Thursday, Sept. 13th - Unity's World Day of Prayer - prayer service at 6pm led by Sharon Mullins.

The Dent Dinner - Charleston WV

Events this Week at Unity

Hello everyone,

The following events are happening at Unity of Kanawha Valley this week:

SATURDAY- "INNER LISTENING" CLASS AT 10:30AM WITH MARIANNE GETTMAN.  Please join Marianne for this class of conscious breathing, slow stretching, balance exercises, guided relaxation, chakra meditation, and Qi Gong Flow.

SUNDAY SERVICE  AT 11AM:
"Affirmative Prayer: Who, What, When, Where, Why?"This month starts a series on Affirmative Prayer, and I am really excited about this. This Sunday's lesson will look at traditional prayer in contrast to affirmative prayer, as well as a wonderful scripture: "The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world" (I John 4:4)

Some of us are reading the book "How to Pray Without Talking to God" and it is wonderful! We will be starting discussing the topic this Sunday at 10am, before the service. I know! Too early for a Sunday, right! For those who want to linger in the morning, we will also be doing our pick-up discussion group after the service as well. Having read the book is not necessary, you can join in the discussion at any point. Come as you are!

And remember, you are a blessing!
